Since 1996, all new drivers have had to pass a seperate theory test before obtaining a full driving licence. In November 2002, a hazard perception part was introduced to this test.
Whilst it is by no means necessary to pass the theory test before you begin learning to drive, you must pass it before you are allowed to book your practical test.

The theory test is screen based. There is no writing required and you will not be asked any questions by the examiner. The test consists of two parts. The first part of the exam requires you to answer multiple choice questions.
Here is an example of the type of question asked:
Braking distances on an icy road can be:-
A. Twice the normal distance |

| C. Seven times the normal distance |
| D. Ten times the normal distance |
The answer is D, ten times the distance
